The schoolgirl Maj-Lis comes from a wealthy family and is unhappy with her life. Emmy, her friend at school, tells Maj-Lis about her lousy job at the Vidi department store. Maj-Lis then decides to apply for a job at Vidi to learn more.

Young provincial actor Perda, long confined to minor roles, is cast unexpectedly as the lead in a vacuous new play by an ambitious writer. Despite a lackluster script and an audience that largely abandons the performance at intermission, the production proceeds to secure funding. Frustrated by being told to blend in, Perda ultimately decides to assert himself boldly on stage.

Melodi Grand Prix is an annual music competition organised by Norwegian public broadcaster Norsk Rikskringkasting. It determines the country's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, and has been staged almost every year since 1960.The festival has produced three Eurovision winners and nine top-five placings for Norway at the contest. However, Norway holds the record for the number of entries who have come last since entering Eurovision; 11 in all. Despite this, the competition still makes considerable impact on music charts in Norway, and in other Nordic countries, with the 2008 winner topping the Norwegian charts.

Nina and Frederik were the big names in international showbiz in the 1950s with their rousing calypso rhythms. That's why "Kærlighedens Melodi" (The Melody of Love) was bound to be a hit when the young, beautiful couple teamed up with the legendary, wonderful "Satchmo," Louis Armstrong, from the world of jazz. Musical interests vary widely in the affluent neighborhood of Hellerup. At the Schmidt wine merchant's, son Peter has only one interest: jazz. At the Supreme Court lawyer's house next door, Mozart is on the program. But his daughters like both jazz and Peter! Even though their fathers are suing each other, the two young people still find each other. And Louis helps when he plays "The Formula for Love."
